White Bath Towels

White bath towels are all the rage at the moment. Decorating trends have swung from the very fussy to the very simple, opening the door for the classic white fluffy bath towel. These have been a staple in luxury hotels and spas everywhere. The keynote here is opulence – that’s what you want in a towel such as this. The emphasis is on texture and GSM (grams per square meter). The higher the GSM, the denser the fabric and the more luxe the towel.

White bath towels look terrific contrasted with dark cabinetry and more organic type décor. They add a bright accent when paired with neutral wall colors, such as sand beige, sea mist green, putty, or robins’ egg blue. To keep this look pure use only white bath towels, wash cloths and hand towels. And put the emphasis on texture in all of your accoutrements. A nice fluffy white bathrobe would be right at home with this look. Make sure you don’t have too much clutter and nothing frilly. Geometric shapes and bolder chunkier accents go well with this look. You can splurge on quality. Some white French milled soap, fragrant candles, high-quality bath rugs, maybe some glass apothecary jars, things like that work well and will complete your look. Err on the side of less is more.

Your white bath towels can be made of cotton, organic or not, bamboo (which has a very velvety-soft texture), or microfiber which are made of engineered fiber and have an excellent absorbency. You can even get white bath towels made from hemp which is mildew-resistant. Other types of fabric are now being used including modal, which is made of cellulose from Beech trees. Modal is 50% more absorbent that cotton.

Don’t forget the top-of-the line cotton fabric – Egyptian cotton, and the American counterpart, Pima cotton, which is sometimes called by its by its trademark name Supima. Egyptian cotton has longer, more fibrous threads which makes an extra-soft and fluffy bath towel. Pima cotton works in the same manner.

You may find when you first purchase your towels they look extra fluffy. This is usually due to the manufacturer using a special treatment to make them look that way on the shelf. They may look nice, but they won’t absorb water well. Because of this, you should wash your white bath towels before using them. Naturally, to keep your towels fluffy you’ll want to tumble dry them, but do not use the high setting as that will damage the fiber. You’re better off using a lower heat setting or even air-dry them to keep them looking good longer. Believe it or not, it is better not to use dryer sheets or fabric softener as it affects the absorbency and will change the texture.
